After a Long AI Talk, I’m More Certain: The Real Gap Is Just Beginning
Today I had a long conversation with Luoxue. We talked about AI, but we were really talking about people.
After that conversation, one thought became much sharper for me: we keep saying AI is already mainstream, but the number of people who have truly embedded AI into their workflow is still small. Most people are still using it as a smarter search box. And the people who pay for better models and keep refining a process over time are an even smaller group.
This is not a theory from a report. It is the practical feeling I have built over the last three years. The more people I speak with across ages and professions, the clearer one pattern gets:
people may all be “using AI,” but the outcomes are drifting further apart.
What looks mainstream is often a bubble
Inside creator, tech, and startup circles, names like Claude Code, Codex, and OpenClaw sound normal. Step outside those circles, and many people still have not done one high-quality human-AI collaboration from start to finish.
That should not surprise us. Technology adoption is never linear in the early phase. One group experiments early. Another watches. A third enters only when there is no way to avoid it.
The problem is speed. AI is not moving in annual steps. It is redrawing capability boundaries every quarter. Many people think they are only one step behind, but they may already be missing the most important window: behavior formation. While some people are building templates, automation, and personal systems, others are still comparing which model gives a nicer single answer.
I believe this more strongly now:
the future is here, but it is very unevenly distributed.
My path changed three times in three years
Looking back, I was not “good at AI” from day one. I went through three clear phases.
The first phase was experimentation.
I treated AI as a Q&A tool. Sometimes impressive, sometimes disappointing. The biggest mistake in this phase is common: people use average outputs as proof of AI limits. After a few weak results, they conclude, “This is overrated.”
The second phase was efficiency.
I became willing to pay for stronger models and started using AI for real tasks: writing outlines, organizing sources, processing data, and reviewing business decisions. The keyword here is time saved.
The third phase was systemization.
This has been the biggest change in the last year. I stopped chasing one-off answers and started chasing reliable delivery. I connected a material library, task decomposition, templates, and automation scripts. AI moved from “can talk” to “can finish work.”
Watching Luoxue use OpenClaw continuously for about two weeks reinforced this for me. You can feel the difference. It is not novelty. It is the satisfaction of getting real things done.
At this stage of life, sustained action usually comes from one of two places: pressure or interest. AI can turn new technical possibilities into immediate feedback, and that feedback can drive more learning and more execution.
That is why I now see this as non-negotiable:
learn while using, use while feeling, and adjust while moving.
The real divider is not asking better questions
Why do outcomes diverge so fast if everyone is “using AI”?
Because most people are still in search mode, while a smaller group has moved to collaboration mode.
Search mode: you ask one question, get one answer, and stop.
Collaboration mode: you provide context, goals, constraints, and output format, then work with AI until the task is delivered.
The first mode optimizes for “knowing.” The second optimizes for “shipping.”
This is also why I think this industrial shift is unusually disruptive. The first and second industrial revolutions mainly replaced physical labor through machines and assembly lines. This wave is rapidly re-pricing cognitive labor. Consulting, software, operations, content, and analysis jobs, once seen as hard to replace, are already showing visible efficiency gaps.
I am not saying humans will be fully replaced. I am saying the distance between two groups will widen quickly: those who build workflows with AI, and those who only chat with it occasionally. That distance may be as meaningful as the gap between horse carriages and cars.
A practical 30-day plan for regular users
If this feels overwhelming, start simple. Do not chase the strongest tool first. Build one closed loop in 30 days.
- Step 1: Choose one primary scenario. Writing, e-commerce operations, or data organization.
- Step 2: Choose one primary tool. Gemini is Good for most people. Keep it stable for the full cycle.
- Step 3: Fix input and output paths. Inputs go into your material library; outputs go into a fixed draft/task folder.
- Step 4: Automate one repetitive action every week, even if it is small.
- Step 5: Track three numbers daily: output volume, rework count, and completion time.
At the end of 30 days, the answer becomes clear.
You are not “bad at AI.” You probably just never put it into a real system.
