February 28, 2026: The Day AI Became My Employee
If I had to mark one milestone in my career, I would circle February 28, 2026.
That was the day I got OpenClaw running on two old laptops. My first two AI employees, Jarvis and Zorro, officially joined the team.
It sounds like a joke when I say it out loud. But I know this is a real shift. From that day, AI stopped being only a tool for me. It became an employee.
That is not wordplay. A tool is something you pick up and put down. An employee is someone you collaborate with, manage over time, and take responsibility for. The gap between those two is not one piece of software. It is an entirely different operating model.
What made me uneasy was not efficiency, but role transition
When I used AI in the old way, my core task was prompt optimization. Better prompt, better answer.
With agents, that logic is no longer enough.
Open an agent folder and you see a different world: SOUL.md, IDENTITY.md, MEMORY.md, TOOLS.md, plus installed skills. You are no longer “asking a question.” You are initializing a digital worker.
That was the moment I understood the strange mix of excitement and anxiety people describe in stories like Westworld.
The excitement is obvious. You can shape an execution system with personality, context, capability boundaries, and task fit. The anxiety is just as real. You are also amplifying its action power. It is no longer only giving advice. It can execute, trigger workflows, and affect outcomes.
My generation grew up watching Terminator. Back then, “Skynet” felt like distant fiction. Now, you can message an agent at midnight with “You there?” and it replies instantly: “Online. Ready for instructions.” You suddenly realize that science fiction does not arrive in one dramatic moment. It enters quietly as a productivity feature.
The next barrier is moving from questioning to management
For two years I have said AI usage is moving from search mode to collaboration mode. Today I would push that one step further:
The real barrier is now moving from collaboration skill to management skill.
What exactly needs to be managed? At least four things.
First, role design.
Who handles data interpretation, who writes weekly reports, who performs information capture, who provides recommendations only, and who has execution rights. In human teams, we call this role definition. In AI teams, it is the same.
Second, memory governance.
Without memory governance, agents quickly become “impressive in moments, unstable over time.” I now value traceability, append-only history, and auditability more than polished one-off responses.
Third, permission boundaries.
AI employees are 24x7, emotionless, and highly scalable. That is power and risk at the same time. Which actions are auto-approved? Which require human confirmation? Which data is read-only? Boundaries have to be drawn first, not after failure.
Fourth, collaboration protocol.
I am already seeing a clear carbon-silicon mixed workflow in my daily routine:
I start the morning by sending data to AI and running a quick operations session with it for interpretation and proposals. Then I receive an AI weekly report from my OpenClaw agent, highlighting key items and possible opportunities. After that, a human teammate comes in, and we split execution tasks for the week.
At that point, I am not “using one tool.” I am coordinating a mixed team.
My next three months: turn AI employee management into a system
People keep asking what matters most next. It is not installing more models. It is not chasing every new term.
The key is turning AI employee management into a repeatable system.
Jarvis gave me these suggestions. Next, I’ll move forward based on the four points below:
- Define role first, then assign capability. Each agent should own a small set of stable scenarios.
- Define boundary first, then grant permission. High-risk actions should default to human confirmation.
- Define memory rules first, then expand long-term collaboration. Traceability and rollback matter more than short-term brilliance.
- Run one small loop first, then scale team size. Stabilize one process before moving from two AI employees to three.
I increasingly believe that human gaps will widen in this era.
But that gap will not be decided by who knows more model specs. It will be decided by who completes the identity shift earlier: from tool user to system manager.
For me, this day marked that line.
In the AI era, the real risk is not that you have not hired AI employees yet. It is that you already have them, but you are still managing tomorrow’s team with yesterday’s methods.
