OpenClaw Made Me 100x Faster. So Why Am I Busier?

For the past week, I have been using OpenClaw at high frequency, with two instances running in coordination.

I kept hitting issues and climbing out of them.

Objectively, stability is still a concern. But its ceiling is clearly strong. You can feel that delivery-style AI is no longer just “answering questions.” It is rewriting how work gets done.

I thought higher efficiency would make life easier.

It did not.

I got busier.

This is not emotional exaggeration. It is a concrete operating reality: I moved from single-core, single-thread work, at most single-core dual-thread, into multi-core, multi-thread mode. Agents stay online 24/7 and keep sending progress updates, issues, exceptions, and pending confirmations. It feels like receiving a high-tech weapon and a new layer of responsibility at the same time.

Efficiency Gains Are Real. So Is Workload Inflation

Here is the core point:

Higher efficiency per task is not the same thing as a lighter life overall.

On a single task, OpenClaw can deliver order-of-magnitude gains. Research, task breakdown, first drafts, and structured output are all much faster than before.

The problem starts at layer two.

When you realize something can be finished faster, you do not naturally stop. You naturally add more:

  1. You used to do one task, now you run three in parallel.
  2. You used to ship a baseline version, now you add an optimized version.
  3. You used to aim for completion, now you aim for simultaneous completion across multiple tracks.

That creates a paradox:

Efficiency goes up, and total workload expands with it.

Without boundary control, AI productivity gains get eaten by newly created tasks. You end up busier, not necessarily better.

What Drains You Is Not Execution. It Is Management Overhead

My strongest insight this week is simple: in human-AI collaboration, the exhausting part is often not execution itself, but management overhead.

I see four categories.

  1. Authorization overhead
    What can be auto-decided, what requires escalation, what needs your final call. If boundaries are vague, agents ask at every step, and you get interrupted continuously.
  2. Verification overhead
    An agent finishing a task does not mean it is ready to use. You still need to verify direction, check facts, and review risk. For public outputs, one bad call can be expensive.
  3. Emergency overhead
    More workflows mean more exceptions. Stalls, drift, dependency conflicts, context loss. You become the incident handler. The AI does not get tired. You do.
  4. Context overhead
    Parallel threads require a larger global context in your head. Where did we leave this discussion? Which task depends on which output? Which conclusion is still unverified? All of this consumes attention budget.

Many people read this fatigue as “I am not working hard enough.”

My conclusion is different:

It is not about effort. It is about governance of the new system.

In the Human-AI Era, Set a Ceiling Before You Scale

If I had to give one practical suggestion to anyone using OpenClaw-like agents at high frequency, it is this:

Do not ask first, “How much can I do?”

Ask first, “What is the maximum I should do?”

This week, I started applying a simple but effective set of rules to bring workload back into a controllable range.

  1. Task tiers: only Tier-A tasks are allowed to interrupt me in real time.
    Everything else queues into defined time windows.
  2. Reporting cadence: move from real-time bombardment to batched summaries.
    Review at fixed time slots and consolidate multiple updates into one digest to reduce constant interruptions.
  3. Verification thresholds: define scenarios that always require human review.
    External publishing, capital-related decisions, and critical revisions are never auto-approved.
  4. Daily cap: set a hard limit on newly added tasks each day.
    Once the cap is reached, no new intake. Close loops first, then expand.

These rules may look conservative, but their effect is practical:

They pull you from “being chased by tasks” back to “actively dispatching a system.”

That is how I now understand human-AI coexistence.

It is not humans becoming machines. It is not machines replacing humans entirely.

It is humans doing what humans still must do:

set boundaries, make judgments, carry responsibility, and hold rhythm.

And leave protected time for deep thinking. In a human-AI future, this may be one of the few remaining high-value areas that still requires humans in the loop.


Technology will get stronger. Threads will multiply. Temptation to over-expand will grow.

But in the end, what determines whether you can run long-term is not model specs.

It is attention governance.

In the AI era, manage total workload first. Then pursue total output.
